Illuminae: A Review

Hello all! Long time no speak.

Firstly let me apologise for not being as active on here as I have been since I started blogging. I started my new full time job about a month ago and, while I love it, I’m shattered by the time I get home and just want to watch a bit of TV and go to bed early! I’m going to try and get more reading done on my journeys to and from work by getting an audiobook subscription (which I’m sure I’ll make a post about once I’ve tried it), whilst also reading a physical book when I can.

Secondly…I FINALLY FINISHED ILLUMINAE! I started reading this on the 1st of October, and I eventually finished it today (4th of November). I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was so different to what I’m used to with books but it was brilliant.

I liked the characters and I liked seeing how they interacted whilst being on space, using different technologies and forms of communication. I also liked their development throughout the book and how they formed relationships, even the unlikely ones. I also found the AI situation interesting. I think this is the first book I’ve read in a long time that has an AI in it, and I really enjoyed it. AIDAN’s interactions with characters was intriguing.

I love the way this book is laid out, it’s so different. Ever page was different; whether the page went from black to white, it had pictures made up of words, or if it had lines of text flowing through it in patterns. It was just so different. I’m looking forward to picking up the second and third books at some point – probably after Christmas.

The one downside of this book was that it didn’t grip me at first. It was only when I got about a quarter of the way in that I was hooked – but I think that was more down to me than the way the book was written. I didn’t have a lot of time to read last month because of work and trying to balance a new schedule, but hopefully now I’ll be able to read a lot more.

As always, thank you for reading and again I’m sorry I’ve not been online as much as I previously have. I miss blogging and I’m trying to make more time for it when I can.

I hope you all have a great week!

Have you read Illuminae? If so, what did you think? Does the series get better??

  1. Wonderful review! I started Illuminae a while ago but never got the chance to finish it before I had to return it to the library. I didn’t get used to the unique format, which is probably why I never made it a priority to read it. I’ll definitely pick it up again after reading this review though! I’m glad to hear that it gets better by the end of the book. ☺️

  2. YAY YOU FINISHED IT! ❤ And I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Agh this review makes me want to read it so badly now. I'll have to keep in mind that there's a slowish start though; that really is such a downside, but I'm happy to hear it gets better!
And awh no worries at all about being absent from here! Hope everything continues to go alright at your new job and that you get some more reading in when you can! Happy November, Sarah 🙂
